NOVOGEN seminar for the egg producers in Peru
In May 2018, NOVOGEN was pleased to participate in training seminars for the egg producers in Peru. The seminar was organised by Gramogen, the NOVOGEN distributor for Peru, who managed to gather the most important egg producers from the Trujillo and Chincha areas. Thierry Burlot, NOVOGEN´s Geneticist, and Antoine Le Calvé, NOVOGEN´s Nutritionist, participated on behalf of NOVOGEN.
Thierry Burlot presented about the future perspectives of layer genetics, showing that further improvements can be expected for better persistency, efficiency, robustness and egg quality as well as the adaptability of the layers to different production systems (i.e. alternative and cage systems).
In addition, Thierry introduced the producers to the newest techniques that are being used in NOVOGEN’s genetic program (Genomics and RFID) for speeding up the genetic progress and for selecting new traits that were difficult to measure in the past.
Antoine Le Calvé made two presentations with a very practical approach that was of great interest for the egg producers attending the event. The first talk was related to pecking behaviour in which he identified the triggering factors that can result in this alteration (i.e. stimulus, stress, insufficient body frame development) and he gave several nutritional techniques that can be used for tackling eventual problems.
In addition, Antoine made a presentation related to the Calcium metabolism and its relation with egg shell quality all across the different production stages. He explained about the importance of knowing in detail about the solubility characteristics of the available calcium sources, so the producers could make a more precise formulation oriented to produce a high-quality egg shell.
During their visit, Thierry and Antoine had the opportunity to visit some farms to observe how the NOVOgen Brown commercial layers behave in local conditions and also exchange with producers.
